Food Crisis Due To COVID-19
Food is the basic need of every individual. Food habits usually vary with the cultures one imbibe in them. Different people from different parts of the world follow different food habits. Our world today is affected with Covid - 19 pandemic. We all know we are facing a crisis because of this in many sectors. When we are mentioning the crisis it is mandatory to look into the food crisis. Will Covid -19 bring a food crisis in the world ? The answer is yes because if the current situation in the world continues then we will definitely face a food crisis.
The Covid-19 pandemic has led to the declaration of lockdown in different places of the world. The lockdown is applied for all sectors and industries. For us to have proper food there are many people and many industries contributing their role. Starting from cultivation, in many areas even farmers are prohibited from doing their work. After farmers completed their work the raw materials are taken into their respective manufacturing industries for the end product. Even the manufacturing industries are locked down. The transport industry which plays a major role in transporting our food near us is also locked down. Let us sit back for a moment and thank all the people who manufactured the food items we are having now in advance. Besides that it is also important for us to realise that many stores are running out of stocks which is going to lead us to a food crisis.
In our world before this pandemic occurred there were people who used to die because of starvation every day. According to Food And Agricultural Organisation (FAO) a total of 842 million are estimated to have chronic hunger. FAO statistical reports in 2015 states that around 25,000 people die with hunger everyday. Around 9.1 million people die with starvation every year. The number of people who are going to die due to starvation in the present situation of COVID - 19 is unpredictable. Earlier if any virus infects us then only the person used to suffer, but corona is taking away lives by creating a food crisis.
So, how are we going to handle this situation? Some simple measures can be taken as follows:
1. Do not waste food:
Food is very important for us to be the way we are today. We know time once wasted cannot come back and even food once wasted cannot come back. If we waste time we are doing a loss for us, but the food we waste can be the meal of someone who is starving themselves.
2. Cook food wisely:
It is not important for us to have all cuisines in one day since we are staying at home. It is not mandatory for us to party daily with different food varieties. Since we are staying at home, everyone of us tends to eat a lot of food. At this point let us remind ourselves that we eat to live, but not live to eat.
The above mentioned measures are only going to help us for a short span of time but not in the long term. This is not going to be a permanent solution. So to find out the solution let us sit back, have the food whatever is available in our kitchens today and think peacefully because “ a good day and a bad day can only be made better with good food.”
